November 30 Corruption in The Coffee TradeRecently I watched a great (although incredibly one sided) documentary called Black Gold exposing the coffee trade corruption & the plight of farmers living in famine. The documentary makes Starbucks look like Satan’s little sister—no more Fraps for me! I wrote to Tim Horton’s begging for information in regards to Fair Trade Coffee (something the documentary clearly endorses) For those of you interested, here was their response…
Dear Ms. Siggia, Thank you for your email. We are always happy to hear from people who are concerned about the plight of the small coffee producers who work so hard to provide us with the coffee we all enjoy so much every day. We are very concerned and very anxious to be a part of the solution to their problem. We have been working very hard to develop a plan that will have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of the small farmers in need of our assistance. The following paragraphs provide you with a summary of the initiative that we started at the beginning of this year. Once you read and digest it, I hope you will be able to recognize and acknowledge that, as with the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation in Canada and the USA, Tim Hortons is a caring and socially responsible company with a genuine desire to give back to the communities (at home and abroad) where we do business. The lack of stability in the world price of coffee over the past several years has produced a very serious crisis for small coffee producers in the poor rural areas of Central and South America. Tim Hortons has for some time been looking for ways to get involved at origin. Tim Hortons as always wants to be hands on in a way that will have a lasting and positive impact on the people in need of assistance without being involved in a hand out scheme. After lengthy discussions both here and at origin, we concluded that if Tim Hortons was going to make a meaningful contribution in the fight against poverty amongst the people who work so hard to provide us with one of our most important core products, and if Tim Hortons was going to play a meaningful role in providing for the supply of quality coffee going forward, any program to be sponsored by Tim Hortons would have to achieve 3 things: 1) it would involve the farmer long term and in doing so it would increase the disposable income for the farmers and their families; 2) it would protect the environment to ensure that the land will be able to sustain coffee production long term; and, 3) it would improve social conditions for the farmers and their families. It was that conclusion that led us to the concept of “Sustainabilityâ€. What does sustainability mean? According to the World Commission on the Environment it means meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. What does sustainable coffee production mean? It does not mean fair trade coffee – Tim Hortons looked at the fair trade program and decided that although the goals of the fair trade program were admirable, the program did not adequately address some of the long term issues involved. Accordingly, we decided against simply buying fair trade coffee as a way of trying to solve the problems faced by small coffee producers. We do not believe the fair trade coffee program provides the farmers who are so much in need of assistance with a long term solution since “fair trade†provides for an artificial price that bears no relationship to coffee quality or the world price of coffee. It also requires certification at a cost of about $1000 US, an amount most small coffee producers just do not have. The fair trade program also excludes larger farmers who may be doing all the right things for their workers and the environment but are just too big. Tim Hortons believes that sustainable coffee production provides the best opportunity for a long term solution that involves the farmers directly in the solution without any handouts. It provides them with the support and training they need to be successful, it works to improve social conditions and it emphasizes the need to respect and protect the environment for future generations. In order to develop a program that would achieve the goals set by Tim Hortons, we entered into a sustainable coffee partnership with EDE Consulting, one of the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe of companies out of Hamburg Germany. The Neumann Kaffee Gruppe is one of the world’s largest green coffee importers, exporters and producers of coffee, supplying almost one out of every 7 cups of coffee consumed in coffee importing countries around the world. EDE Consulting manages sustainable coffee projects throughout the world’s coffee producing countries and it is EDE with whom Tim Hortons has partnered with in this pilot program. It is our goal in the pilot program to give the farmers the assistance they need to improve the quality of the coffee they produce, improve its quality then assist them get their coffee to market, even if they elect not to sell the coffee to Tim Hortons. In doing so we believe we can significantly impact the quality of life these people enjoy. By way of example: The average farm in Guatemala is 1-2 hectares in size and currently the farms in the project area produce about 500 kg of coffee per hectare. By giving the farmers the skills to properly prune, fertilize and maintain their coffee farm we believe the production from these farms can be as much as doubled within 2 years. That coupled with helping the farmers secure the best possible price for their coffee will significantly increase the disposable income from their farm. In addition it is our goal to help the children of these farmers just as we have helped so many kids in Canada and the USA through the THCF. Under the pilot program technical assistance will be provided to teach proper pruning techniques, fertilization, irrigation, and the effective use of coffee processing stations. Sertinsa, a member of the Nuemann Kaffee Gruppe will assist in getting the coffee to market at the best times and at the best price. Investments will be made in the infrastructure in order to complete or repair existing processing stations, or to provide portable processing stations. Crop diversification will be encouraged – simple things like encouraging the planting of bananas amongst the coffee trees. The banana plants provide valuable shade for the coffee trees which helps to improve coffee quality while providing another crop for the farmer as food for his family or as another source of income. The implementation of sustainability standards (covering such things as working conditions, health and safety and water use, conservation and protection) will entitle the farmers to receive a premium for their coffee if they respect the environment and their workers. Beyond help for the farmers on the farm, the program will also look to improve the social conditions of the farmers and their families by identifying the pressing needs of the families, especially in the area of education for young people. The pilot program involves two projects funded exclusively by Tim Hortons. One is located in eastern Guatemala and the other is located in North Huila, Columbia. The project in Guatemala began in March of 2005 and will touch about 1000 small coffee farmers (about 5000 men women and children). The project in Columbia will be launched in early 2006 and will touch about 200 small coffee farmers and their families (about 2000 men women and children). Each project will last for 3 years with the goal of having each project area self-sufficient by the end of that time. It is Tim Hortons goal to set positive results from both projects and then be in a position to fund at least 2 similar projects each year thereafter. The project in Guatemala has already produced some very positive results. The small coffee producers have formed a new co-op (called ACCSO). The project co-ordinator and technical assistant are constantly in the field, training producers in topics like shade regulation, fertilization, pest control and processing. Demonstration plots have been established for each group and are used to train farmers about agricultural best practices. A detailed plan has been developed to improve the coffee processing infrastructure. The first coffee from ACCSO was sold to Sertinsa at the end of the last crop. And, finally a plan to extend rural secondary schools has been developed and approved by the Guatemalan government. Under that plan 5 new schools will be opened in January 2006 covering grades 7-9 and based on a model developed in Mexico. These schools are supervised by one specially trained teacher using video teaching tools. This is a major step forward for the children in the project area since until now most of the kids education stopped at grade 6 since the closest school was too far away or the parents could not afford the monthly tuition of $8 per student. With this new and innovative program, Tim Hortons is going to improve the living conditions of thousands of small coffee farmers and their families. More importantly, we believe that Tim Hortons will set an example and a new standard for the rest of the coffee industry and showcase how coffee can be produced in a sustainable way based on strong partnerships along the supply chain – producing a clear win-win for everyone involved. If you have any further questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact us. Yours truly, Stephanie Operations Services Representative November 06 from Orakwa International Indigenous Ent.I once lived very close to the Six Nations Reserve and learned many many sacred things that have become part of my daily practice. I was/am honoured to have been allowed to visit. This is and always was Indiginous Land...not just reserve land....all of Canada was theirs! We live on stolen property & carry the karma of it today....it doesn't matter that this happened in the 1800's. What matters is that we are--should be more evolved today! This is indicative of government power over land. This could happen to you. You don't have to be Native to be kicked off your land. If the government decides they want your land...doesn't matter the sentimental attachment, as long as they give you market value, you are GONE. What if the market crashes and your family farm is only worth a fraction of what it normally would go for? Then that's all you get. Its easy for us 'city folk' to turn a blind eye and say its a 'native issue'....hell no! its a government power issue that could affect us all. i'll tell you one thing, the karma we carry from what our ancenstors have done to the natives (and now we still continue to do it) affects us ALL.

Canada finally laid its position on the table at the latest side table meeting of November 3rd 2006. What was it? Basically in a nutshell their position is that "it doesn't matter if protocol was followed back in the 1800's, it doesn't matter if the monies that were supposed to paid for the lands were paid, it doesn't even matter if they followed the law at the time, it only matters that the courts today will find in canada's favour because they believe it was Six Nations intent to surrender the land". They cited truck loads of documents that they have to back up their position. The only truck required is the manure truck to take their load of b.s. away! They even had the nerve to try to and flex their muscles by indicating that the peaceful negotiation process failed and that oh well, we tried; and further suggested that they are standing strong on their position with the Plank Road but would look at a more global approach. They made this statement without even hearing Six Nations position. You know what that tells me? Canada doesn't want to admit its guilt and has no intention to. All week in the media they've been tossing this issue back and forth like a hot potato, neither the province nor the federal government wanting to take responsibility. The Federal Government is citing that they are not responsible for pre-confederation treaties or land transactions. Well then buddies, send in your Governor General or Her Majesty. Better yet, send in your pope because what this boils down to is the Law of the Land, and ultimately, we know clearly who holds title to that, and the trickery lies and deciet used to usurp that authority is well known in Creation.
Canada has the nerve to call Six Nations "lawless" and terrorists" because we adhere to the principals of our own law, the Kaierenekowah, and do not now, nor have we ever, acceded jurisdiction to the Crown. We are not Subjects, We are Allies. Yet today, what is Canada's defense .... they didn't have to follow the law! I guess that's their perogative. If that's the case, every single person who is in the process of buying a home, buy it, but don't pay for it. Canada says that the laws today will find in your favour because all they have to prove is intent. Better yet, all those who hold mortgages, stop paying for them. Canada says you don't have to. Furthermore, that would exempt everyone from paying taxes on our lands as well, so i think we should organize a big tax revolt. Stop paying your taxes, put it in a trust, and Six Nations will handle that trust. It won't matter if the monies get to benefit you, as the supposed title holder, we'll turn the tables and do as we see fit with those dollars because ultimately, what Canada is saying is that even though the Indian Agents at the time were lining their own pockets, bank rolling Canada at the expense of Six Nations, the law today will find in their favour. So what worked for them, should work for Six Nations.
Another reason they offered is that Six Nations had more warriors then the British had army, and that Six Nations insisted on creating their own leases, but because the British Crown refused to allow that, they were forced into disposing of our lands to look after all of the squatters. Of course, their position is that it was at the insistance of the Six Nations. Well, given a couple of hundred years of population growth, the number of warriors of the Six Nations now, coupled with the alliance of the other Indigenous Nations that are standing in solidarity with us, I would say that we still have a stronghold on our territorial lands, and that the Crown had better realize this. If they believe that the coercion, forceful and decietful tactics that they used in the past are going to continue today and that the Onkwehonweh are going to stand by and watch this fraud continue against our brothers and sisters across Turtle Island, they had better think again. I am asking all Onkwehonweh of the World to send a clear and concise message of solidarity with the Six Nations to the Crown's representatives and remind them that their responsibility to honour and uphold the treaties, take responsibility for its actions of fraud and misappropriation of trust, and to come to the table with the intent to resolve the situation rather than to try and deter from the Truth; otherwise their actions are contrary to Peace. The Onkwehonweh are standing strong and will continue to. We are not going to be bullied into acceptance of the biggest conspiracy and fraud known as Canada, and we will not tolerate Canada's attempt to be judge and jury in this case! Main Table meets on the 9th of November, and Six Nations will be presenting its rebuttal to the history of the Crown at the lands side table on November 14th. Will keep you posted.
As far as life at the site, we have welcomed many visitors to the site in the past few weeks. Yesterday, there were visitors from Columbia who shared their history, which was pretty much the same as our's having gone through acts of genocide, theft and encroachment of their homelands etc. etc.; they were able to make a presentation at Chiefs Council as well. They will be sending us a flag when they go home. Last week I received correspondence from supporters in Melbourne Australia and they are going to be sending two flags for us to fly in solidarity at the site. An Australian flag and their Aboriginal flag. I am overwhelmed with all of the letters of unity and support, the visitors who stop in with supplies, for all of those individuals and organizations who have helped out financially, and to all those who keep sending their prayers......Nya Weh!
The United Nations of Love and Light will continue to Inflict Peace throughout the World and Truth and Justice for Creation will Prevail.

Joseph Brant’s Skullduggery - Deposed by Six Nations in 1805.
MNN. Nov. 6, 2006. Joseph Brant, born a Mohawk and educated by the British, became a British subject, violating Wampum 58.
Under Wampum 35, he was appointed a Pine Tree Chief, a ceremonial position with no powers in council. “Should any man of the nation assist with special ability or show great interest in the affairs of the nation, if he proves himself wise, honest and worthy of confidence, the chiefs of the League may elect him to a seat among them and he may sit in the council of the League. He shall be proclaimed a “Pine Tree”, sprung up for the nation, and be installed as such at the next assembly for the installation of chiefs. Should he ever do anything contrary to the rules of the Great Peace, he may not be deposed from office. No one shall cut him down, but thereafter everyone shall be deaf to his voice and his advice. Should he resign from his seat and title, no one shall prevent it”.
A Pine Tree Chief has no authority to name a successor nor is his title hereditary. His sole responsibility was to translate. The British and their marionette, Brant, illegally sold and signed away large tracts of Mohawk land in New York State and Ontario . He and the British knew full well he had no authority to do this. Therefore, all his transactions were and are fraudulent.
Today Canada and Ontario are using Brant's phony land sales and giveaways as the basis for their claims to our lands. They know very well it doesn't hold water. The following deposition by the Six Nations Chiefs and War Chiefs was to inform everyone that Brant’s words and deeds were illegal. In 1808 he murdered his own son Isaac. He could never live with the Mohawks because of his treachery. Brant died in 1811 alone in his mansion in Burlington . Fifty years later, he was brought to Brantford where he lies in a Masonic grave. [The document is blurred and we have indicated on our transcript the illegible parts with a ? mark. We apologize for any indeliberate misnomers].

Brethren. It is (erst?) a few words that we, the Six Nations, wish to inform at this time, it is what have been saying at our fireplace in Buffalo Creek. As it is customary for the Six Nations to call Councils for the misconduct of chiefs so as to have all faults related here before such councils, we have learned from information that Captain Brant has not conducted himself to the satisfaction of the Six Nations and according to our Indian customs he is no more a chief. And we the Six Nations all of us agree is no longer to be noticed as a chief in the Six Nations. The following are the names of the principle chiefs in the Six Nations.

January 24 Constipated Conservatives Take The Wheel! As expected, the Conservative commercials were right…Martin, you’re fired! Hopefully now that the election is over, so is the mud slinging. Amateurs!
The thing is, I normally love to pick on Martin. My favourite nickname for him is Sally-ass….you get the point. The truth is though, I have spoken with someone who knows Martin personally. I am informed, in his defence that the guy is truly Canadian in every good way. When he started on the quest for the captain’s chair, it wasn’t with egoist intentions. He truly had ideas; he had visions for this country. He made us rich again…even with a putz like ‘Jaque Poutine’ (according to Bush) in charge. Maybe it was the pressure that bound him…the opposition…..but Trudeau, Pearson…all our great ones seemed to operate within similar confines and still do great things.
Martin got there, and then just existed~ he didn’t radiate like he intended. On a personal level, dreaming human to dreaming human, I feel sad for him today…and pat him on the back for trying. Thanks for making us rich Martin….hopefully Harper won’t squander it and us to the first bidder. And after all my bitching and moaning about you, I have to say, today I’m sad that its not you…..but it can’t be. On a deeper level, I know it shouldn’t be. Let me tell ya Martin…if ever this country needed you, it’s now. It’s now that you lead the nation, through your opposition. You now represent those that oppose some of the stupid things he’ll try to do. That will at some point, be the majority of the nation. I think if you use this time resonating like those of The Great’s, you may even get back—even if you ran as an independent. Make Your mark NOW!!!!!
That being said,
Seeing as the Constipated Conservatives only got in on a minority, I am not too concerned about the damage they can do….the Lib’s will surely be a red tape pain in the ass on most issues—I’m guessing arguing just for the sake of arguing…so as usual, nothing gets done. As usual, Canadians stick with the same asshole parties then bitch that nothing ever changes. Typical.
My only concern are the rumours of Harper wanting to kiss US ass….Canadian/US relations are important….but if keeping them happy means acquiescing to Bush philosophy, I’d rather opt to piss them off some more. Harper better watch this bullshit on missile defence & Iraq as well, or he’s in for a good old-fashioned Hexing-trust me. It’s not his fault I guess… boys with small missiles like to talk about big ones.
What fascinates me is that nation wide we had over 9000 Marxist-Leninist votes and over 3000 communist votes in this country. Wow. It doesn’t sound like a lot…..but 13, 000 commies is the start of a movement! Beware. Those are the openly commie…..how many do we have on quiet reserve?
So when China calls in all the American debt that they own, and in effect, run the country….we’ll have a mini-communist movement ready here to embrace them……gives me the eebie geebies! The Wizard used to say that he couldn’t wait until we became a communist country so we could all sit around and do nothing. He truly believed it would happen in this country some day. I sure as hell hope not….but China frightens me….and to be honest….Harper does too…a little.
Christian Heritage got almost 30, 000 votes….so there are 30,000 people here that won’t give Bush the finger. But that’s about it.
My beloved Marijuana party got nearly 10,000 stoner votes—rock on my brothers & sisters—I’m a fan! Green is up over 600, 000 votes—pretty impressive for a party that barely advertised and wasn’t allowed to debate. Next election I’d like to see them kick down a few doors!
I assume there is a huge population of voters (like myself) that were registered the day of—so aren’t counted in voter turn-out stats just yet….I’m desperate to see that number. As of now, records show 64% voter turn-out…..makes me puke. It’s your f-cking civil duty ass holes---take a f-cking interest!

January 03 The Election: A psychic perspectiveThe following is my psychic perspective on Paul Martin, Jack Layton, Stephen Harper, Gilles Duceppe & Jim Harris as party/potential country leaders. This is not a commentary on their respective party platforms. This is an evaluation of the resonance of the individuals chosen to lead them.
Paul Martin: Great at math, but in my opinion is a pansy—time to go. According to my trusty Tarot deck Paul Martin pulled the Tower card-CATASTROPHE. PLEASE send him home.
Jack Layton. I don’t trust him…I don’t know why, I just don’t. Nothing comes easy to this guy. Tarot deck advised to be cautious…think deeply before casting your vote. I will say one thing though….Jack Layton won’t kiss anyone’s ars. If there is something he intends to do…it will get done one way or the other. I still don’t believe however that he is the highest resonating option we have.
Stephen Harper: The Constipated Conservatives lost my vote long ago, and their denial of a youth wing cemented my choice, but I have to say on an ENERGETIC level Stephen Harper is alright. If it came down to a choice between him and Paul, I’d definitely pick Stephen. He got the Tarot card of Justice and Judgement. Whether you like his platform or not, I believe he is in this game for the right reasons.
Gilles Duceppe: Here is where my personal intuition collides with the Tarot. I look at Gilles and see the Son of Satan. His eyes are evil, cold and devious. I bet he's cunning--possibly even brilliant...but that doesn't mean he's of the light. Not to mention, any person that advocates bitter resentment and a divisive attitude in a country that is overall enlightened and peaceful should be extricated from the system. The Separatist movement in this country is a cancerous tumour…..ugly but removable. Let’s see how “separate” they want to be when they need Federal Aid to assist in recovering from things like storms, power failures & disease. Ignorant fools.
That being said, my Tarot deck gave him the Lovers Card & Night & Shining armour card….meaning that his whole heart & soul is in his mission. He and his escapist minions truly believe this is the best for all.
Jim Harris wins my vote! This has nothing to do with my being a tree hugger. This has to do with the man’s resonance and ability to lead. He is an awesome orator…something we need on a world stage to combat the public likes of Martin & his predecessor. Smart guys who talk with their heads up their….
Jim also has a soft, pure aura. He got The Star card in the Tarot –Divinely Guided-plain & simple. His intentions are pure. I was shocked to see his picture. A high vibration human in politics???? It exists????? YES it does!!!! Finally we get the REAL thing…and we find it in Jim Harris. Forget the party platform, as a voter you know it doesn’t matter what they tell you they intend to do. Once they get in office, they’ll do what they’ll do, often straying from earlier promises. In my psychic opinion, Jim Harris is the highest vibration candidate we have and we would do well as a country to give him and his young party a chance.
Over the years, we have seen Liberals, Conservatives and NDP take a ride at the helm, with putrid results. It’s time for positive, enlightened growth in this country. The only way for us to transcend as a nation, is to choose a leader that is enlightened. In my psychic opinion, although the other candidates may ‘seem’ impressive on paper, Jim Harris is the ONLY one running that is enlightened. The rest of the candidates merely exist, where Jim Harris actually resonates. There is a diamond light that surrounds him that I have seen very seldom. He is a rare jewel in our political landscape and it would be a sad day in Canada if we lost our best chance at evolving.
Canadian voters are known for having ‘the devil you know is better that the devil you don’t’ mentality. Time and time again we see the same faces, same players, same parties. Time and time again they disappoint us leaving us feeling distrustful of government. Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result is the definition of insanity or stupidity depending who you ask. Understand that voting is a responsibility and that our government is as good as the people we appoint to run it. Be discerning!

October 24 Mark Emery: Canadian Hero & USA Political PrisonerMark Emery: Canadian Hero & USA Political Prisoner
Where’s Amnesty now????? If it were Fidel Castro locking Emery up they’d be all over it!!!!! What REALLY burns my ass is that Health Canada referred medicinal users to Mark….and now our very own Government delivered him to this Gestapo US Regime on a silver platter….like John The Baptist of our time, all as a continued effort to kiss the US’s ass. And what a stinky ass it is that we try so hard to kiss. We’ll bitch over beef and lumber (and rightly so)…. but sacrifice our own citizens as poster children for The US to use as fodder?
If Mark was prosecuted in Canada he would at most get slapped on the wrist…not serve the rest of his natural life in prison!!!! Murderers do less time. Mark will serve the rest of his natural life in jail, for a couple of seeds????? C’mon.
Let’s face it…Mark has been a thorn on the side of our government for many years. Since he’s untouchable here…how convenient it is to ship him to the most corrupt country in the world. Just like Pilot…wash your hands, claim no responsibility.
I am not saying I agree with his choice to sell seeds (considering his political position) especially to a country where in some parts they still marry their kin. But this issue is not about seeds or legalization of marijuana.
This has to do with the Canadian government’s corrupt plan to be rid of a politician they didn’t like…because he tried to get them to be honest perhaps? This is a modern assassination of one of our own. BE AFRAID CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn’t matter if you are a fan of Mark or weed. Understand that Mark fought IN THE SYSTEM. So…be warned. Even if you use legal means (like running for public office) to bring awareness to an issue….if the government doesn’t like it….they will find a way of disposing of you. They will call their BIG BROTHER HENCHMEN to do the dirty work for them. Oh, the Canadian government won’t have you assassinated as in shot. We are way too polite for that. That’s a US strategy even some of their religious leaders endorse (as in the comment made by the US’s leading bible thumper in regards to Venezuela’s leader)…here in Canada they’ll just farm you out to their degenerate neighbour!!!! GOD THIS BURNS MY ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BE AFRAID CANADA!!!!! BE AFRAID!!!!!!!! BE AFRAID!!!!!!!!!! Actually, no….don’t be afraid…..GET PISSED!!!!!! GET PISSED AND DEMAND THE STOP OF MARK EMERY’S EXTRADITION…..because next time…it could be you. We obviously can’t trust our government to protect its citizens as they are CLEARLY in collusion with those hick Neanderthals in office south of the border. Its up to us to protect ourselves.
When is Bush’s term over? Anyone counting the days????? Oh yeah….the whole world is!

April 24 The Evil Of Marijuana Derived Prescriptions
The Evil Of Marijuana Derived Prescriptions If the government, through pharmaceutical companies, is using marijuana to create prescription medicine, then obviously it works. So, if it works, why destroy it in its natural state, and mix it instead, with poison, just to make a buck? Don’t you see??? They know it works. Too many people are putting pressure on the government to legalize pot, especially for the ill. But, if people smoke pot, or drink its tea, pharmaceuticals (and so the government) goes BROKE. So, if we are going to demand pot, the government is making sure it can still profit from it, by making their party contributors rich. Don’t let them take something whole and pure and make a sacrilege out of it. That’s like selling Holy Communion as a chewing gum. Fight for your pot, not these prostituted chemical concoctions!!!!! Daniela Siggia Author of For The Love of Self http://spaces.msn.com/members/danielasiggia/ danielasiggia@yahoo.caApril 01 Snuffing Out The Future, One Kid At A TimeSnuffing Out The Future, One Kid At A Time The other day, I was amazingly impressed with my ten year old god-daughter who had taken it upon herself to challenge a new rule her school was trying to implement. With great maturity, she wrote a petition and was able to get signatures from the entire school as well as support from her teachers. After a successful meeting with her principal, a compromise was reached and all were satisfied. Her principal complimented her on her maturity during the whole process, but she apparently remarked that in future, maybe she should find a more creative way to express her feelings and those of her peers other than through protest measures like petitions. I remember my first protest--it was far less benign than a petition. My schoolmate and I organized a student walk-out in support of our teacher's work to rule. After first period, when the bell rang we were all to stand up and walk out of the school and straight to Parliament Hill to protest with other schools that we had alerted to our plans. I was so nervous that I trembled as the clock drew nearer to the time. What if I was the only one to stand up? What if the students used the opportunity to skip school and not protest. If they don't show up, I'm going to take the blame for all of them skipping school. Could I trust my fellow students to do the right thing? Could I trust myself to make a difference? The bell rang, and to my relief about 85% of the students joined me and Patti Kelly on a triumphant parade all the way to a PACKED Parliament Hill, full of students from surrounding schools. I knew at that moment, that one voice can affect thousands, and that I can make a difference. I knew at that moment that my future would include rising up against injustice...and now thirteen years later, I am a social commentator-my job is to stir people up. That high school protest was judged by adults as an act of teenage rebellion, yet to me, it was a defining moment in my history which had a huge impact on what I became as an adult. I see the same spark in my goddaughter. Should we really be dissuading our children from trying to assert themselves? What if Gandhi, Jesus or Martin Luther King were talked out of their own passion and potential? Where would the world be? What if Mother Teresa gave up on her dream to help the poor when the church first turned down her request? If my goddaughter was 30 with a petition, she'd be considered an activist, at 10 she's a delinquent in the making? When I heard her story, I looked at her with a strong hope and feeling of potential for the future generation. Don't we want our kids to end up smarter and more evolved than us? That won't happen if we extinguish their inner spark so young. When a child shows that kind of interest and initiative, we should direct that energy in peaceful, constructive directions not extinguish it completely. Where would society be if nobody stood up for what's right? Our future is in the next generation, let's teach them to be strong stewards of justice, working peacefully to help society evolve, not close them up in a box of fear and censorship. That is how dictatorships are maintained, and the last time I checked, Canada wasn't being run like Cuba--our schools shouldn't be implying to our children that it is. This attitude of clipping the wings of our future was festered in the Conservatives decision to deny a youth wing. Not surprising. The last thing those constipated conservatives could handle is evolution. Its ridiculous to me that all parties don't have a youth wing. Let's keep our children engaged, and help them become part of the solution in our system, not drive them to be a part of the problem by making them feel alienated by society. After all, they live here to and are constantly at the mercy of our decisions, the least we could do is give them a constructive platform to express their views from. It beats sending them off to a gang, cult or rebel movements (not that politics is any more moral these days.) Adults must remember that kids grow up, and as we become elderly, the tables turn and we eventually are left at their mercy. Treat them with the respect they deserve. Its unfair to assume the "youth" doesn't know about politics because of their age. I can assure you, in high school I was better aware of what was going on the political world than I am now. I'm too busy paying bills to care much these days, and I'm sure for many adults its the same. Let's get our kids young, while they are still interested and not yet jaded--and keep them that way!!!!! Tomorrow depends on it! Daniela Siggia Mississauga: The Police StateAs a single woman out after dark, one would think that I'd be comforted by police presence. Not. Tonight, on my way home, I got inspired with a great idea for an article. I pulled into a Tim Horton's parking lot and parked in a more isolated part of the lot for privacy. I call it 'sanctuary in the city.' I grab a coffee, listen to my music softly, grab my journal and pen and let loose on the page. That's my process. Alone, in the privacy of my car. No interruptions, just me and the page. I was in a great space and on an awesome roll when all of a sudden a police cruiser aggressively pulled up behind my car, blocking me in the spot, and just sat there. He repeated this unsettling ritual 5 times in 10 minutes, each time almost screeching to a halt and watching like a stalker. He went through huge theatrics just to make sure that I knew he was watching--like a stalker. It totally creeped me out, and broke my flow. He finally got out of the cruiser and I got out of the car and ignored him as I walked into Tim's, having to spend more money I can't afford, just to get this cop off my back. All I was doing was sitting and writing a piece on a very important social issue, trying to help. Instead, I was rudely disrupted...but boy, did it ever inspire another article. At their expense, but in this case it serves them right. What is this, Beirut? Are things so bad that every citizen is a suspect? Or is that just what they want us to feel? Here I sit in an uncomfortable metal chair, in a room that is too bright, with terrible music playing way too loud, people everywhere talking way too loud, totally deflating my creative urge. What does someone have to do to get some sanctuary out here? Yet I feel stuck in here, just to avoid having to deal with some reincarnated Gestapo cop. Mississauga certainly didn't make this citizen feel welcome. Is the city run by Americans? It sure feels that way. Maybe I'll take my tax dollars back to the country. When I lived in the country (served by Simcoe OPP,) the police seemed to care. Even the arrogant ones were doing it with good intentions. I saw cops call victims of crime on their days off just to see if everyone was O.K. I guess its easy in a town where the population is only 2000. The police knew everyone by first name. They know exactly what they're facing. If it was me in a cruiser vs 200, 000 + people, I'd be defencive to. Cities are overpopulated. Look at these filing cabinets we call condos. We're like dead bodies piled one on top of the next in big heaps. A flip of the collective consciousness switch could send a city this populated into carnage filled chaos in seconds. I understand why police, as a preventative measure, tend to use fear as a method of subliminally creating submission. Don't get me wrong, as a single woman in the days of a 'serial rapist,' I am glad that there is a police presence, however, I would rather their presence be a gentle reminder that someone is looking out for me not at me. After all, they are trained on how to observe in suble ways, they should use those skills. This is not Honduras. Stop planting that seed. I believe the majority of the population is love based and is ultimately benign. If there is something the police know that we don't that warrants all this aggressive bully paranoia, then we must be told! I'd like to think that Mississauga is as enlightened as its pretty, with a predominantly moral populous. Let's start treating each other with that respect. By all means guys, do your job, but lighten up on us regular folk. Our streets are here for you to serve, not strut your testosterone on. Read your car doors before you slam them shut. Namaste (I salute the Divine within you) Daniela Siggia Author of "For The Love of Self" Canada's Health Care: The Surest Way To Die.After an agonizing night suffering a pulled muscle in my upper back that even kept me from breathing normally, at 5:30am, I gave in and drove myself to emergency. It used to be that upon registering, they asked for the contact info of a family doctor. This time, she asked me if I had a family doctor. I told her that I didn't and have been actively seeking one but haven't found one willing to take on new patients in five years. I haven't even had a physical in that long. The 'if' in her question struck me as odd and I asked her if my answer was a common one. She said yes and as a matter of fact, she herself, a full time registered nurse, couldn't find one either. Her family doctor had retired, and despite working full time in a hospital, she still hasn't found a GP to go to. "Its that bad." She said. The whole process start to finish took six hours--just to get an X-Ray. Despite the wait and the few drops of dry blood that wasn't mine on the bed's foot controls, everybody was very nice and compassionate. Their compassion didn't do too much to calm the fears caused by the HUGE warning sign upon entering that let me know that patients with communicable diseases have been admitted. As if that wasn't bad enough, we were also warned that due to the lack of beds, many were being treated on gurneys in the halls. We were advised to keep our distance, disinfect often and not to touch walls or counters. Are we back to the days of the plagues? So much for all the poison vaccines they've been pumping into us all these years. All this autism for nothing, but that's a whole other discussion. A few days later, a friend of mine began to suffer severe abdominal pain and a fainting spell. She couldn't bear the thought of ER, and thought she may have better luck at a local walk-in clinic/ultrasound centre. We sat in a non-ventilated room with approximately thirty five people that were mostly looking putrid and pasty, for two solid hours before she was called. After a two minute exam that consisted of him merely poking at her belly, he said, "Well, its either an ulcer, gall bladder, or flue. You should go see a family doctor." What if she didn't have one??????? She told him that she couldn't get an appointment until later that week, and was too concerned after also having a fainting spell to wait. He dismissed her and told her to take Tylenol for the pain until her appointment. He also advised her to wash her hands upon leaving as he had seen over thirty people with severe diarrhoea and vomiting that day alone, and that he assumed that the majority of the patients still waiting had the same virus. NOW THEY TELL US???? 2HOURS LATER???? I keep hearing more and more horror stories and they keep getting worse. What's really going on here? I don't mean to sound ridiculous, but are they trying to kill us off to save pension dollars? Is that how our government is going to keep our old age security system afloat? By killing us off before we get old enough to collect? It sure seems that way. Our universal health care is killing us. I doubt this is what Pearson or Trudeau had in mind. Daniela Siggia danielasiggia@yahoo.ca March 31 Before We Send Our Kids Off To DieCuriosity led me into a local army recruitment office in Mississauga Ontario not long ago. I was greeted by a hunky guy in full army gear that looked like he needed a life and personality saving enema. I must not have fit the profile, because he all but dismissed me. What was it? Didn't I look naive or suicidal enough? After insisting, he gave me a recruitment package. It made romantic promises like "a sleeping bag under the stars" and "your sea-based home will be a bunk and a locker with an incredible view. Ever changing. Ever moving. You'll see and experience different cultures. You'll become worldly. " Even me, a woman for peace, got the flutters. I've been on vacations that have promised less. They boasted about their state of the art technology and equipment. Hmm....that's not what Rick Mercer says. State of the art compared to what? I always believed it was the U.S. that had the best of military might. With Yo Semite Sam running the land, you would think they would have the best in killing hardware and personnel, and then, even that, got deflated. A wonderful episode of The Passionate Eye on my beloved CBC told a different story. At first, I watched a sergeant give a pep talk. He said, "Be Polite. Be Professional. Be prepared to kill." Killing politely, I figured that would be a Canadian military procedure. We are known world wide (almost) for being polite--its only safe to assume our killing practises would be cordial as well. It gave me hope to see an American be aware of the term. Could they be evolving? No. They are too busy dying overseas to evolve. Apparently, they must have killed off their regular army, because in this episode, teenagers from The National Guard were being deployed. Kids that go a weekend or two a month, mostly for fun and girls were being shipped out and equipped with "Vietnam era equipment" that routinely broke down. At one point, they left a stalled unarmoured truck full of teens like sitting ducks in enemy territory. I watched these almost children try to armour their own vehicles with sandbags and old pieces of scrap metal because theirs were falling apart and leaving them exposed to enemy fire. I hear we are not much better. Since I was a little girl, my mom always encouraged me to join the reserves saying "If you want to go to university Daniela, I won't be able to afford it. Join the reserves: they'll educate you and you get to travel. The army treats you well." Yeah, maybe while you are at home. Its obviously true what they say "Out of sight, out of mind" and that's exactly how the military treats its members serving overseas. If you are going to put the nation's children in harm's way to serve you're political/economic interests, the least you could do is give them every opportunity to survive. Don't ship them off to die. Maybe our "Strong, Proud" recruitment package as it's called, should include a risk assessment page. Don't these kids (age 16 with parental approval) have a right to know exactly what being a reserve means, and what they may have to face? Offer statistics on how many die each year, or suffer major injuries. How many get maimed? One kid on the documentary held up a sign "What happened to the 2 weekends a month, 2 weeks a year?" on the day he began his eighteen month deployment. For the record, by Canadian standards, a tour of duty is three years for non-commissioned members and nine years for an officer--that's a lot of time with substandard equipment. You are bound to die. Please, please, please don't delude yourselves or your children. Peace keeping missions are just as dangerous as any other military endeavour. Please don't endanger your children for the sake of a university degree. What is a degree going to do for them if they are dead, maimed or scarred for life? Daniela Siggia Author of For The Love Self March 30 Killing For CompassionIs society ready for the responsibility of euthanasia? If compassion includes dehydrating someone to death, I gotta wonder! Don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with euthanasia per se. I'm undecided on the issue. Personally, for public record, if I should be vegetative or in serious torture, please kill me. But do it nice. Don't say you love me then force my last hours to be complete deprivation. How barbaric! Stick me with something beautiful, like Opium or Heroin. Give me a little hit at first just to make it sweet. Then maybe play some Kirtan to help me gently go out of body and pray with me a minute. Then juice me up and send me to God in earthly/bodily ecstasy. If my last months/years are so bad, you think killing me is the only loving thing to do, then make my last moments on this beautiful ride on earth remarkable. Either way you are about to kill me, at least be nice about it. Many years ago, a friend of mine died of AIDS. His last years were rough, and last months depraved, but he just wouldn't die. Out of desperation we prayed that God would take him. This one, it felt like, God threw at us as an experience to unravel in many dimensions. No one was really arguing about the choice to help him on his way, but the doctors insisted it be by dehydration. His partner of forever, and only love, was absolutely tortured at the thought that as much misery as he was already suffering, complete with brain parasites, it would be compounded with the hell of dehydration. Ultimately dehydration and overdose achieves the same end, so why not pick the painless route especially since no one was asking the doctors to be the ones to do it? Not only did the doctor refuse to look the other way, they watched all visitors to make sure no one else did it. They dissuaded anyone from giving any water as we were all reminded that it would only prolong his agony. It was bad before they suspended hydration, but after.... He was shrivelled up in a fetal position. A thick, putrid yellow puss like film lined his cracked lips. His mouth was always open, with his tongue protruding, his throat gurgling like a silent beg for mercy. That same yellow puss like substance had dried and crusted his eyes shut. It took him four days to die. He looked like a dry leaf. Schiavo is an incarnated angel that has offered herself up as a mirror. In Italian, Schiavo means slave, and that is just what we have done to her. If we are just going to complacently sit by and literally watch this woman shrivel up and die, at least let it not be in vain. Let's talk about the issue. Not decide who is right, wrong or the most loving. Let's get a gauge on where society-not judges-stands on the issue. It worries me that the only opinions I hear are from politicians, celebrities and activists. Let's face it, families may be too close to the issue to decide as well. Like I said, if I was her, I'd want to die. My mother, I know, would never let it happen. You would have to hit her with a tranquillity gun just to get in the room. I'd like to get the opinions of my fellow citizens. I think a referendum should be done in demographic groups. For example, I'd like a poll taken from people currently living with a progressive/terminal illness. A poll on family that have lost a loved one to degenerative disease. How about a poll done on people who have assisted a euthanasia and ask if they'd do it again. I would also be curious to see what the followers of various religions and non-believers really feel regardless what their leaders tell them to think. We should all get a say, because it has the potential to affect us all at one point or another. I don't believe the question should not be limited to whether it should be allowed or not, but if we do allow it, if we are going to kill and call it compassion, then we should be doing it compassionately. Also, where do we draw the line? Are we ready to make sure that compassion won't lead to population control, or some sinister Hitler type 'cleansing.' Do we start 'euthanizing' untreatable paedophiles, serial killers or criminally insane? What about children born with severe disabilities, will we rationalize it then too? Are we going to become so desensitized that morality flies out the window eventually? We must stop baby stepping around the issue and dissect every aspect of it, as inevitably, it will come up. Shouldn't we all decide on this before someone else has to suffer another martyrdom to bring light to the issue. This is more than just right or wrong, live or die. Do we wait for someone to be so bad off that suicide is their best chance at release? If someone is going to kill themselves anyway, should we do it for them, to spare them the karma that comes with suicide? Then again, does the person committing the act take on the karma? Who has the answer? Personally, I believe there is no answer. I believe this is an issue we use as a gauge to see where we are on a higher evolutionary perspective. So lets do that then. When we know what everyone thinks and believes, we at least have a place to start. We must commence an open dialogue in regards to the entire issue, to try at least to figure this out, for all our sakes, and for the sakes of all we love, because you never know...
